On language

This little gem comes from a pretty interesting little New Yorker piece about Sarah Palin's resignation. Call me elite or whatever, but stupidity, illiteracy and lack of curiosity are not virtues.

Here's a comparison of the words of one of our founding fathers and, 233 years later, the words of Mrs. Palin (from a prepared text, mind you).

These are Thomas Jefferson's words on on political change:

"Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

Here’s Palin on the same subject:

"Government’s supposed to serve from the bottom up and not move towards this top-down, big-government takeover, but rather will be protectors of individual rights, who also have enough common sense to acknowledge when conditions have drastically changed, and they’re willing to call an audible and pass the ball when it’s time so the team can win."

This is a fantastic new spot from the folks up at Wieden for Levi's. It's set to an actual recording of Walt Whitman's "America." I think it captures the restlessness and spirit of America quite well. And of course does it for what I would argue has been one of our greatest exports ever: the most American brand of blue jeans, Levi's.
